Mondoweiss (Updated)

geoffff

I know it's likely futile but this blog's public relations director, spokesman and all round public face and good guy, Che Gorilla,  is attempting registration under user name geoffff to comment at Mondoweiss   the US based blog of antizionist leftist Philip Weiss and associates that likes to play the Jew card big time.

"Mondoweiss is a news website devoted to covering American foreign policy in the Middle East, chiefly from a progressive Jewish perspective."
Cool. That's exactly what the world needs. A progressive Jewish perspective. We've never seen one of those before.

I've never been to young Phil's blog although I've heard of it.  A bit like young Antony's blog over here but with more money to splash around. I get it now. More mouths to feed.

The first post that caught my eye was this one.

The conversion of Joel Kovel (Part 1)

At the annual July 4 weekend picnic held in the Catskills by Michael Ratner and Karen Ranucci this year, Joel Kovel gave me stunning news at the beer table: he said that he had been baptized on Easter, at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Harlem.
Born Jewish in Brooklyn in 1936, Kovel is a renowned radical scholar. His latest book, The Enemy of Nature, is an “eco-socialist” polemic against capitalism as the source of global warming. His book before that, Overcoming Zionism: Creating a Single Democratic State in Israel/Palestine, is a classic of Jewish anti-Zionism.

Wow.  I just love a good yarn about a Jew finding Jesus in a Church of England in Harlem on Passover on American Independence Day. Something like that anyway. You gotta admit you don't see that often.   It's worth a picture.

Because I take Kovel so seriously-- and because the question of conversion is such a fascinating one; consider such influential figures as Heinrich Heine, Annie Dillard, Muriel Spark, and Bob Dylan -  I asked if I could interview him about his conversion. We met at his Upper West Side apartment on August 22; and I followed up with a short interview by phone on September 2. Our conversation is very long, so I have broken it into two parts. The second part will run in a couple of days.
Like every other life form on the planet within twelve thousand kilometres,  Che Gorilla had never heard of Kovel until taking a sniff at Mondoweiss just now and now that the Gorilla's nostrils have had a twitch or two takes Kovel seriously not at all. Gone like a pebble in a bottomless inland spring.

Kovel is funny.  "Eco-Socialist" ?.  Please.  Give this poor old silverback a break.

Still cool though. Not because "the question of conversion is so fascinating" either because it isn't really unless you are already converted.

It's because the extremist mind is fascinating and a little scary and in that regard Kovel has undertaken no conversion at all and here is why in his own words.

I came from a good sized family. Each parent had four siblings, and there were many people from the old country, but I can guarantee you that the only one I truly loved was my Aunt Betty, and I knew she loved me. She was my father’s youngest sibling, and the model of a liberated woman. She went out and founded a business, and she was written up in the papers, a Jewish woman going into the world.  She had a visiting nurses service, her own little firm, and she had a son of her own who is now deceased.  And she and I were really close. I loved to be around her, she was very funny, and a model of all the strong women I’ve been drawn to in life.

And then she fell very ill. She had a horrible form of cancer. I was 16 when she started to decline. It was ovarian cancer, one of the worst, and it deformed her very much. She was a big strong person, and she had 6 months of the most hellish descent. It was an awful death. And I went to her funeral, and it was a secular funeral, because she had broken with the Jewish faith. She had never taught me to break with the Jewish faith, I don’t know where she stood on Zionism. I just knew she was an atheist and didn’t want to be part of the Jewish faith.
A horrible thing happened at the funeral. The service was at Riverside chapel near Grand Army Plaza, and it was miserable. A man spoke who didn’t know her at all, and mumbled some platitudes, then we went over to her house. I was a freshman at Yale, and I had come down for the funeral. I went to her house and stumbled around in the most desolate way, then I overheard these women’s voices behind me, three of them, and I listened to what they were saying. They were three of my aunts, I won’t identify them further, and they were saying in so many words, Betty was a bad person in life and a bad person in death, she had showed no sympathy to them, she had showed no respect for the Jewish faith, she didn’t give them the benefit of a proper Jewish funeral where they could mourn as Jews mourn. You see, all she did was die of cancer, a horrible death, and be buried as she wished. But it wasn’t good enough for them. She was 40 years old, and she was the light of my life in many ways, she was very bright, like my father.

Sometimes you can't believe what you read.. What a terrible  story.  Dear me.  What a nasty spiteful family our "something of a public intellectual"  has sprung. .

Here is his story. He's the favourite son of an affluent Brooklyn family and a Yale brat down for the funeral of a favourite aunt who died tragically..  Up until then his only adverse experience with religion had been a cranky old ratbag rabbi who didn't like Jesus. Just the one?

I should have thought that was pretty good. Wouldn't you?

This is Brooklyn  in  about 1954 for crying out loud. .

Let's put it to the secularists for a vote.

It could have been easily much worse.

What would he have preferred?  A wave  of priests and nuns much closer and common in his life and who loved Jesus for sure but probably hated Jews almost as much and said so and probably hated you as well.and certainly acted as they did often in the most abominable ways.

This is New York 1954 almost immediately before Che Gorilla's most recent reincarnation by extraordinary co incidence. Think Ireland. Think Brittan where appropriately the Anglican brand was dominant. Think Australia.

This now is known. We have all heard it from the survivors.

What is his point?

The Joel Kovel point in his own words :

How did you react to what they said?
Oh it was apocalyptic. It was a great thunderclap, as if the world was coming to an end. I was completely startled. I was barely 17 at the time. [My emphasis - look it up]
Did you say anything?
Not directly. What I did was I left immediately, I bid a hasty goodbye, I said I had to get back to school and I went out.
Did you express your feelings to anyone in your family?
No. I understood she was their close relative, and they hated her because she wouldn’t accept their tribal identity. And I could not share that understanding with other members of my family. I didn’t. I should have.
But what happened to me as a result is that I sealed myself off from my family. From that moment on I was a superficially loyal and cooperative member of the family, but I said to myself on that day, I will have nothing to do with them in re the Jewish faith. I basically broke with Judaism at that point.

Comment from Che Gorilla

(born around the time Aunt Bettie died)

Maybe I'm her reincarnation? I share a lot of her attributes with all due modesty.

Dear me Mr Kovel. Their tribal identity?  You  big girl's blouse.

He "breaks" with his religion at 17. So what? No biggie.

Maybe for him but not for anybody else in the secular world and by that I mean the liberal democratic world where law is made by and for men and women and not by superstitious ignorant  and violent men for violent men who say they know the mind of God and don't you dare argue.

Look at the reason he gives for chrissake!

Is that  not the most pathetic and spiteful reason for "breaking" with a religion you have ever seen in your whole goddamn life?

You "break" with a religion because it does not offer enough to you or it traumatised you or you drift from it because you move either spiritually philosophically politically or physically.

Or you fall in love. Or all of the above. Right?

You don't then break from the family and people most of whom would likely be as appalled at the spiteful words of a tiny group of relatives as Kovel so sanctimoniously appropriates exclusively  for himself.

What an affront to his family who he doesn't even give the benefit of doubt. What an affront to  the "tribe"  as well who also don't get the benefit of doubt.

Not to mention an affront to the religion which it goes without saying also doesn't get the benefit of doubt. I almost didn't.

Kovel is some kind of  radical socialist. Therefore all he did was swap one religion for another before he had even reached manhood.

Joel joined a new tribe before he even grew up.

He is allowed to do that in our societies. He is protected by the law even if he needed protection from anything but himself.

He is not condemned by the law.

That's the whole point that Joel and the antizionist Christian clerics and communists will never get. And the Jews among them too of course. I almost forgot. For some reason them above all.

...

Forty year old Betty who died while Joel was up at school ( there has to be some reason for all that pent up guilt)  had a secular funeral in Brooklyn in 1954.

Good for her if that's what she wanted.
Then three nasty relatives, sisters of his parents, full of the stuffiness of their age make comments among themselves not intended for his ears about their sibling they loved  to hate.  Appalling shit from appalling people.

The three ugly sisters.
But ...  but ...  what if he had been at an atheist funeral in Brooklyn in 1954 among relatives whose preists and clergy would likely have included men and women far more malign than a rabbi with a nasty chip and a quick lip..

He leaves his religion because of that?

What would his three suddenly unbeloved and very unpleasant aunts be whispering among themselves at a Brooklyn wake for their dead sister if they had been deprived of their sacred rituals  for their atheist communist (or whatever) and especially beautiful young sibling?
And that's it ? One bigoted old cleric  and a nasty little knot of religion obsessed relatives out of a "good sized family"?

Three in a family where each parent had four siblings. Four counting Joel.
No wonder he's counting his blessings.
He cuts out religion and he cuts out the family. Why? Because he cut out the religion they have to go too? I don't get it. I sense a sad man.
At least the religion didn't cut out part of him.
Or may be that is what this is all about.

I'm going to put this to the vote of the secularists.
He should be counting his blessings twice about all that was cut from him. Perhaps his  partners should be as well.

More on this guy to come. He's got my attention. So has the left of the C of E.

I'm curious about Mondoweiss as well. How is this man's story have anything to do with a blog, in the words of Weiss that is

"devoted to covering American foreign policy in the Middle East, chiefly from a progressive Jewish perspective."?

Fair Dinkum. A Jew who converted to Communism as soon as he could at the height of the McCarthy era and now nearly sixty years later has become an Anglican and  stay a Communist.

Not for the first time. A "Broad Church" indeed. I shall return to this subject soon

Update

My registration was accepted and password duly issued which surprised me. Maybe their entry hurdle is low. Let's see if they put up my opening comment and link.

My experience with neo-Stalinists and other hard line leftists and other extremists  and their urgers and supporters with short memories is they have no respect for opinion other than their own and soon work to suppress it as soon as they can. Have you noticed that?

Look at what they refuse to publish comment on:

"Holocaust Denial" or "Nakba Denial"

Seriously I don't think I have ever seen a more disgusting comment moderation rule anywhere in the world in the English language.

Congratulations. Mr Mondoweiss

You made this old gorilla's stomach churn and given the stuff that I've had to eat up over the years that is quite an achievement

You have summed up perfectly what is wrong at the very core of the  leftist mind in a single set of rules.

I can't believe this has not received wider attention. Maybe it has.

We must spit out the Noam Chomsky fur ball preferably within his lifetime.

Anyone who is not convinced of that should go to Mondoweiss.

Further Update

It seems that Mondoweiss has indeed received wider  attention.  As something that even to accept comment from is enough to attract allegations of poisoning the national discourse.

The Atlantic

Philip Weiss has found evidence of Jewish influence and Jewish perfidy in everything from NPR tothe names of the buildings at Harvard University to an innocuous statement by Rabbi Shmuley Boteach. Weiss has argued that the "Jewish presence in the Establishment" imposes its own single-minded, communalistic interests upon the whole of American and British society. "Don't you see," he wrote in a post also suggesting "Zionists" were to blame for the outbreak of the Iraq war, "the vociferousness and effectiveness of the Israel lobby make this conflict Our Conflict!" Ironically, Weiss also believes that Zionism entails Jewish self-hatred.

etc etc

Kane and Mondoweiss are marginal. Open Zion, Peter Beinart, and Newsweek are not, and neither is their subject matter. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a century-long tangle of ethnic, religious, political, and historic sensitivities, and everything from superpower politics to the 25th chapter of the Book of Genesis has the potential to scramble or intensify it. It's easy to lose faith in the possibility of a rational, humanizing discourse when so many communal and even theological imperatives have been clashing for so long, and when something like the re-opening of a ten foot-wide passageway can spark riots that kill dozens of  people. But cynicism is hardly an excuse for letting the discourse backslide or corrode.
Publishing anti-Semites, or people who work for websites that traffic in anti-Semitic innuendo or conspiracy theories, empowers ideas aimed at obscuring the humanity of one side of an already-violent conflict. Kane's inclusion actually undermines Open Zion's confidence that honest intellectual engagement can contribute to the larger cause of understanding and peace. Instead, it reflects a depressing cynicism about the state of public discourse on the Middle East--a cynicism that believers in peace, and believers in the triumph of ideas over paranoia and bigotry, have both a moral and intellectual duty to reject.

And Che Gorilla will have the last word if you please

As it turned out it was neither futile or a mistake.

I had an opportunity to sniff around the fine institution of Mondoweiss and what a splendid institution it is too.      .I was allowed to stay as long as I liked. I stayed as long as I could. It was as much as a gorilla could bear.

Please feel free to put us on your blogroll.

It brought full circle Father Dave, Sizer, clerical antizionists in general,, Socialist Alliance and  a fluke story about an Anglican baptism in NY on an antizionist  blog. Such interesting company you see.

The Gorilla loves circles. It's about the only religion he believes in.

These people think of the "Jews"  as a "tribe". They think Jews (They define "Jew")  march to a different beat to the rest of humanity. They care about different things. They have different rules for themselves.

This is sinister.

More importantly  I have discovered a set of rules that define the rotten heart of modern Chomsky ridden leftism.

We ban Holocaust day denial but we do so in the same breath as Nakba denial

That's worth a post

Chomskyism  must be sucked from our universities. It must be done soon and hopefully within his lifetime. If he was half a man he would lend a hand.

As for Philip Weiss .  Thanks for your legacy. The only mystery about you mate and those other blokes is who is meeting the payroll.  Hopefully US security is on to that.

I don't really care whether or not you publish my comment but I'll tell you something true. The moderation rules for this blog are pretty low. They wouldn't keep a loose dachshund out of the kids' pet rabbit warren . But mate. You fall well short of what is acceptable even around here. .

Christians For War

geoffff

There is a network of them. Ain't the internet grand.

Have a look at this blog.

A whole bunch of fightin' Christian  clergymen so bravely speaking truth to power by urging what they have no excuse for not knowing by now is a war of extermination against the Jews as free people in the Middle East most of whom are or are the descendants of Jews who were expelled or fled from Muslim lands after being robbed of everything except what they could carry and where they had lived for up to two thousand years before there were Muslims.

What about that Nakba fellas?

Is there a single mention of it on your blog?

Not to mention the only place where men women children Christians Muslims Jews homosexuals blacks Arabs silly clergymen of all persuasions including even the silliest Christian and Jewish ones and above all women (did I mention the women?)

What's that about fellas? You must know by now how women are treated across the Muslim world including in "Palestine". You have no right to be ignorant of this if you are taking a public position on whether the world would be a better place if Israel did not exist and all its citizens had once again been robbed of their land property and lives as free people because of a nasty superstitious aberration of the religious mind.  What is this? A game of "don't mention the women"?

Isn't that a little  you know  .. unmanly?

Haven't we seen all this before?

Christians are too important to leave the argument to the likes of you. So are Jews Muslims and women.

All the lying propaganda you can imagine is retailed on the blog of these Christian gentlemen who have deluded themselves that the surviving Jews are the power and that these lies are the truth.
 . The usual stuff

There is even the "Four Maps" libel courtesy of Father Dave.

The following map shows you the division of land between Israel and Palestine from 1948 to 2005. Much of the Palestinians’ land is divided by Israeli military checkpoints. Click on the map for a larger image.

Map of Shrinking Palestine

A lie of course that anyone with any knowledge of the twentieth century and the region could see in a second and classically debunked here.

This map is a lie.

The first panel of the traditional version of this map has the biggest lie:

While I presume that the white sections are indeed the land that was privately owned by Jews, the land in green was not privately owned by Arabs.

Only a tiny percentage of land in Palestine was privately owned. The various categories of land ownership included:

  • Mulk: privately owned in the Western sense.
  • Miri: Land owned by the government (originally the Ottoman crown) and suitable for agricultural use. Individuals could purchase a deed to cultivate this land and pay a tithe to the government. Ownership could be transferred only with the approval of the state. Miri rights could be transferred to heirs, and the land could be sub-let to tenants. If the owner died without an heir or the land was not cultivated for three years, the land would revert to the state.
  • Mahlul: Uncultivated Miri lands that would revert to the state, in theory after three years.
  • Mawat (or Mewat): So-called “dead”, unreclaimed land. It constituted about 50 to 60% of the land in Palestine. It belonged to the government. ...If the land had been cultivated with permission, it would be registered, at least under the Mandate, free of charge.

By the early 1940s Jews owned about one third of Mulk land in Palestine and Arabs about two-thirds. The vast majority of the total land, however, belonged to the government, meaning that when the state of Israel was established, it became legally Israel's. (I believe that about 77% of the land was owned by the government, assuming 6 million dunams of private land as shown in this invaluable webpage on the topic from which I got much of this information.)

To say that the green areas were "Palestinian" land is simply a lie.

In the case of this version of the map, the lie is even worse, as the implication is that pre-1948 Palestine was an entirely Arab country with no Jews and no Jewish land ownership. Of course, before 1948 the word "Palestinian" more often than not referred to Palestinian Jews, not Palestinian Arabs. For example, the Palestine exhibit at the 1939 World's Fair was entirely Jewish, the Palestine Orchestra was entirely Jewish, the Palestine soccer team was almost entirely Jewish, and so forth.

Now the next one:

While this is a somewhat accurate representation of the partition plan (with the notable exception of Jerusalem, which was meant to be an international city,), it has nothing to do with land ownership. The entire purpose of this map is to make it appear that Israel has been grabbing Arab land consistently, to serve as a bridge between maps 1 and 3. What is not said, of course, is that Israel accepted the partition and the Arabs did not, so as a result Israel in 1949 looked like it does in map 3.

Map 3 is still a lie, however, because in no way was the green land "Palestinian" at that time. Gaza was administered by Egypt and the West Bank annexed by Jordan. No one at the time spoke about a Palestinian Arab state on the areas controlled by Arab states - only in Israel.

In other words, this progression of maps is a series of lies meant to push a bigger lie, and it is tragic that a lot of people believe them to be the truth.

Here is a small attempt on my side to show a more accurate picture of Israel's giving land it controlled up for peace since 1967:

This map shows that Israel gave up control of the Sinai, Gaza, Southern Lebanon and much of the West Bank over the years. Rather than falsely accusing Israel as a land-grabbing rogue state, it accurately shows Israel as perhaps the only state in history that has voluntarily given up more than two-thirds of the areas it controls in exchange for nothing more than a paper agreement - or sometimes not even that. All at the risk of serious security concerns for her people, no less.

This is all because Israel wants, desperately, to live in real peace with her neighbors. This desire is not reciprocated by those neighbors, unfortunately.

The real map shows the truth of Israel's incredible concessions in the often vain hope for peace.

"Palestine" is a lie. Even the "Palestinians" say this by now. Listen to these people. Oslo was a fraud all along. They don't want a "Palestinian" state. They never did. They want Israel destroyed and they say so.

We are in a post--Oslo world and the way forward is not clear. But it seems the two state solution is off the agenda forever. The Arab Muslims have said no. No means no. They have convinced themselves it is not necessary even to discuss among themselves. They believe that Israel and the Jews are hated in the West as much as they are in Muslim lands.

When you see blogs like Israel and Palestine   populated by active clergy who have the time to focus on Israel and the Jews in open support of those who demand that Israel be destroyed with what can only be described as religious zeal you do have to wonder.

In Defence of Secularism

geoffff

A very wise man  and  close colleague in two workplaces more than once counselled me in both places as follows :

If your neighbour reads the bible be sure to keep a loaded gun.

I didn't have to ask him which bible. I knew the answer. He didn't care what bible.

I have  never encountered that bracing piece of advice anywhere else and I've just Googled it and it's not there so I reckon it's original.

To be sure my wise man was not a rootin' tootin' fightin' man like our Anglican priest in Sydney but he was for many years a very senior Australian  federal public servant.  A very senior Australian civil servant indeed.

The advice is confronting but it could help to explain the  high rates of home gun ownership across much of the United States.

Mexico too come to think of it. South America as well. Regional Australia.  It most certainly explains it in Israel. I don't have to mention "Palestine" but I will anyway. There;  "Palestine".  And every other Muslim "homeland", whether a land  of the bible or not. Any bible. Any land.  It would be enough  to make the baby Jesus cry.

I am not an enemy of religion. Any religion. I know and have seen the grandest of the human spirit achieved with the fire of  religious belief. Religious belief, any religious belief, is cool with me.

I am  however above all a secularist. At some point there is a need to push back even in your own back yard. This is so irrespective of what you are. This has to be done if you are a Christian. It has to be done if you are a Jew. It has to be done if you are a Muslim. It has to be done if you are an atheist or agnostic and  and it most certainly has to be done if you are a woman. No matter what else you are.

This has to be said.

The Vice Chancellor of the university where Che Gorilla  was a commerce/law student and general bigmouth for much of the seventies was none other than that famous old liberal and great Australian jurist  Sir Zelman Cowen. I remember the day in the quadrangle of that beautiful old university among Queensland's finest when Sir Zelman already known as among the leading constitutional lawyers in the English speaking world defined the limits of freedom and therefore of liberalism itself.

I had already read his words.  Sir Zelman had used them in an address to the  university the year before. No doubt he felt the need to make the point again. They were turbulent times. There were plenty of Commos and other religious cranks around who wanted to blow up the world. Secular liberalism needed defending. .

Your freedom to swing your arms ends at the tip of my nose.

Sir Zelman was expert in US constitutional law. Probably he was paraphrasing Oliver Wendell Holmes who in turn was quoting Abraham Lincoln. One of my favourite Americans of all time by the way. They too were turbulent times.

To all of this I offer the Che Gorilla corollary for the twenty first century.

I don't care what religion you are so long as you don't shove it up my face.  Better still don't blow it up my face.

Which brings me to Father David Smith who by the way I am no longer angry with. From his name alone he could easily be a cousin. There is even a faint family resemblance.

He is not by the way. Thanks for asking.  Thank God. I say that as a secularist.

I'm not angry with David Smith any more because anger passes quickly as it must. I am just sad is all. I had just read his blog that had been emailed to me by friend Shirlee who had seen the good father in action in person last year in the council chambers during the Marrickville Greens BDS No Jew State outrage.

.I will quote Shirlee.

Just the mention of Father Dave sends shivers down my spine. The first time I heard him speak at Marrickville I thought I'd burst a blood vessel   and  I could not believe I was hearing what he was saying. I could not believe this was coming  from a man of G-d

A huh. I hear you Bob wherever you are.

Clergy like Father Dave sometimes like to imagine they are speaking truth to power.

To do that they have to imagine that Israel is the power and the "Palestinians" are the poor weak and defenceless and who are the victims of Israel and to do that they have to be blind to what Orwell would have  said was in front of their noses.

They are not speaking truth to power at all. They are on the side of power and they want to be on the side of power. Israel is a tiny country and the Jews are a handful of people. Antizionist clerics are on the side of those who want to see the destruction of Israel for the sole reason that it chooses not to be another Muslim state.

The enemies of Israel say this again and again. Are the clerical antizionists deaf? Do they think the Israelis are as well? Do they think the Jews are? Do they think the Christians and secularists are too?

Clergy are as entitled to buy into a political issue as much as  any other citizens but they must understand that by this stage of the game they are not entitled to any benefits of clergy.and that includes the assumption that they are in good faith.

Some one said this. This is a quote cut and paste to here. Someone  capable of saying this is entitled to answer some questions:

"Of course Khomenei’s speech needed to be taken in the context of 1979, and I knew the organisers of this rally well enough to know that they are not anti-Semitic people by any stretch of the imagination, and were solely concerned to see justice done for Palestine. Even so, it still wasn’t clear to me whether or not Al Quds day was itself essentially anti-Israel, and I knew that I couldn’t speak of my concern for the suffering of my Palestinian sisters and brothers if that compromised my love for my Jewish sisters and brothers."

Excuse me? Compromised your love for your Jewish sisters and brothers? What about your "Palestinian" sisters and brothers? How is continuing this nasty vile war in their interests? How much longer are you prepared to see it go on? Another ten years? Another sixty years?

Why are you supporting this war against the Jews and against the rest of us?

Are you monsters?

At some point Father Dave and the rest of them will be invited to look in to their own souls even according to their own doctrines. Not the Communists of course but for sure the Christians.  I sure hope they are ready for their own sakes.

Update

The lying four maps that is standard no Jew state propaganda at Father Dave's

There is no excuse for this ignorance.

If you choose to pour this filth on the world while pretending to be men of God then you must be condemned.

Here is some truth in the maps of this tiny spit of land that you want to see stolen from the sole place left for the Middle East Jews.  Not to mention the only place left where Christians, Arabs, Muslims, atheists, agnostics, communists, homosexuals, most definitely Ba Hai , silly clergymen who should spend more time reading books and above all women are FREE!

Look at the world

Look at Israel.

There are people in Father Dave's movement who have condemned Israel as an apartheid state. Desmond Tutu has suggested that.

To call Israel an apartheid state is a racist lie. Shame on you.

Many people, particularly those of the progressive-left persuasion, seem to forget this.

They honestly think of Israel as some sort-of dominating power in the world despite the fact that what it really is is a tiny country trying desperately to survive in a particularly vicious part of the planet.

As westerners with liberal inclinations we've grown accustomed to thinking of the Arabs as "oppressed people of color," but this just feeds our arrogance, our imperialist sense of superiority, and the humanitarian-racist tendency to give little, or no, agency to non-white people.

The fact is, of course, that Islam represents one of the world's greatest empires in history and it still dominates huge swaths of land throughout much of the world... and it is distinctly hostile not only to Israel, but to Jews as Jews, and for religious reasons.

Congratulations Mike on your explosive exposure! Goodonya mate.

I'm going to snitch one of your posts.

I believe that there are people all around the world who have had enough of this vile war against Israel and the Jews for all sorts of reasons and who are mobilising to say so before our eyes.

The Crisis of Secularism --- Pat Condell's View

Pat Condell is a former Catholic and therefore has his own  issues with the Catholic Church. I can understand that but say what you like about the American Evangelicals and the Pope. At least they are not trying to frog march Europe  into dhimmitude. With the cross of Jesus frog marching on before.

Al Quds Day

For many years, I have been notifying the Muslims of the danger posed by the usurper Israel which today has intensified its savage attacks against the Palestinian brothers and sisters, and which, in the south of Lebanon in particular, is continually bombing Palestinian homes in the hope of crushing the Palestinian struggle. I ask all the Muslims of the world and the Muslim governments to join together to sever the hand of this usurper and its supporters. I call on all the Muslims of the world to select as Quds Day the last Friday in the holy month of Ramadan - which is itself a determining period and can also be the determiner of the Palestinian people’s fate - and through a ceremony demonstrating the solidarity of Muslims world-wide, announce their support for the legitimate rights of the Muslim people.

Al Quds Day 2012

...

Israel, the enemy of mankind, the enemy of humanity, which is creating disturbances every day and is attacking our brothers in south Lebanon, must realise that its masters are no longer accepted in the world and must retreat. They must give up their ambitious designs on Iran, their hands must be severed from all the Islamic countries and their agents in these countries must step down. Quds Day is the day for announcing such things, for announcing such things to the satans who want to push the Islamic nations aside and bring the superpowers into the arena. Quds Day is the day to dash their hopes and warn them that those days are gone

Al Quds Day  London 2012
On Quds Day, the nations should caution those governments which are traitors. Quds Day is the day when we shall discover which individuals and which regimes approve of the conspiracies of international groups and oppose Islam. Those who do not participate they oppose Islam and are in agreement with Israel, and those who participate they are committed, and in agreement with Islam  opposing the enemies of Islam at the head    America and Israel. It is a day when truth will be distinguished from falsehood, the day when truth and falsehood will be distinct.

Khomeini  6 August 1980

...
I beseech God the Blessed and Exalted to grant victory to Islam over all sections of the population in the world and to the oppressed over all the oppressors. And I beseech God the Blessed and Exalted to deliver our brothers in Palestine, in Lebanon and in southern Lebanon, indeed anywhere in the world they may be, from the hands of the oppressors and plunderers.

How much longer must your Quds be trampled under the boots of the usurping Israelis, these worthless people whom America has put there (to see to their interests)?

 Al Quds Day Toronto  2012
...

May God help us succeed in one day going to Quds and praying there. I hope that the Muslims will consider Quds Day an important day and that in all the Islamic countries on Quds Day, the last Friday of the holy month (of Ramadan), they will stage demonstrations, hold meetings, have gatherings and attend the mosques where they will shout out. When a population of one billion shouts out, Israel cannot do anything, it will be afraid of their shouts alone. If all the Muslims who are in the world today, and there are about one billion of them, come out of their homes on Quds Day and shout ‘Death to America, Death to Israel and Death to Russia,’ the very words will bring about the demise of these countries.

In order to liberate Quds, machine-guns relying on faith and the power of Islam must be used, and political games redolent of compromise and keeping the superpowers happy laid aside.

The Muslim nations, particularly the Palestinian and Lebanese nations, must punish those who waste time with political manoeuvres and not tolerate political games which end in nothing but loss and disadvantage for the oppressed nations. How long will these myths about the East and West continue to fascinate the powerful Muslims and the hollow propaganda they trumpet over their loudspeakers frighten them?

Khomeini  1 August 1981

...

The nation, government, parliament, army and other armed forces of Iran, which today stand in unified rank demonstrating Islamic unity and divine order, are determined to stand against any satanic power and violator of human rights, to defend the oppressed and support beloved Lebanon and Quds until Quds and Palestine are returned to the Muslim fold. The Muslims of the world should view Quds Day not only as a day for all the Muslims of the world, but one for all the deprived, and from that sensitive point, they should stand against the oppressors and the world-plunderers and should not rest until the oppressed have been set free from the oppression of the power-wielders.

Khomeini  1 August 1981

...

It is the duty of the nations, with the arrival of Quds Day and the anniversary of the martyrdom of that great man in the history of mankind (Imam `Ali [pbuh]), in their gatherings and marches to earnestly demand that their governments rise up against America and Israel using their military might and their oil weapon. And if they (the governments) pay no heed to this demand and instead support the criminal Israel which threatens the whole region, even the noble cities, and the depth of whose aspirations are now apparent, they must force them into action through pressure, strikes and threats. In a situation when Islam and its holy sites are under threat of aggression, no Muslim can remain indifferent. what the governments of the region are doing at this time, when Israel is encroaching extensively on Muslim lands and is killing innocent, defenceless Muslims, is nothing other than uttering empty, conciliatory words. And more disastrous than this is that they turn to America, the criminal kingpin, for protection against Israel, in effect like turning to a dragon out of fear of a snake, and even though they have the means with which to fight them, they are not prepared even to utter a hostile word against them or threaten them. In such a situation, everyone should prepare himself for obliteration and throughout his life consent to any form of humiliation.

...........

Of course Khomenei’s (sic) speech needed to be taken in the context of 1979, and I knew the organisers of this rally well enough to know that they are not anti-Semitic people by any stretch of the imagination, and were solely concerned to see justice done for Palestine. Even so, it still wasn’t clear to me whether or not Al Quds day was itself essentially anti-Israel, and I knew that I couldn’t speak of my concern for the suffering of my Palestinian sisters and brothers if that compromised my love for my Jewish sisters and brothers.

A Response to Jon Haber

Mike L.

(Cross-Posted at Israel Thrives and Pro-Israel Bay Bloggers.)

Those of you who follow Israel Thrives will recall that I recently had something of a dispute with pro-Israel "progressives" on Jon Haber's DivestThis! blog.

There are some Jews on the progressive-left who simply refuse to acknowledge that which is before their very eyes, i.e., that BDS / anti-Zionism is a toxic political sub-movement coming out of the left. It is not coming out of the right, nor does it somehow float above normal politics.

No.

It is primarily a left-wing phenomenon and we need to acknowledge that because it could not be more obvious. We must stop playing ostrich.

In any case, I have responded to Jon Haber's piece, "Israel Left and Right" at my new Times of Israel blog, here:

"Anti-Zionism and the Left: A Response to Jon Haber"

Feel free to drop in and tell me why I am wrong.
